A Consultant Plastic Surgeon Performing Hair Transplants
This combination is less common than patients assume, and it is worth understanding why it matters.
Hair restoration in the UK sits largely outside mainstream plastic surgery. A great deal of it is delivered in dedicated hair transplant clinics by practitioners who are not plastic surgeons, and in many cases not surgeons at all. There is currently no requirement in England for anyone offering a hair transplant to hold a particular qualification, and titles such as hair transplant surgeon and cosmetic surgeon are not protected.
A consultant plastic surgeon has completed medical school, core surgical training and years of higher specialty training in plastic surgery assessed to national standards, leading to entry on the GMC Specialist Register. That training is built around tissue handling, blood supply, flap and graft survival, scar behaviour and reconstruction, which is precisely the biology a hair transplant depends on. Hairline design, likewise, is aesthetic surgical judgement rather than a technical step.
So the point is not the title. It is that the person planning and performing your surgery has been formally trained and independently assessed in the discipline the operation actually belongs to, and is on a public register that says so.

Who Performs Your Hair Transplant
Dr Mouzakis personally performs every stage of the hair transplant procedure. From planning and graft extraction to implantation, this consultant plastic surgeon-led approach gives him exact control over graft placement, density, direction and hairline design, aiming to achieve results that look natural and complement each patient’s individual features.
This is worth asking about wherever you go. In much of the sector, the surgery is carried out substantially or entirely by technicians rather than by the doctor named on the website, and patients are rarely told. The International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery, the global professional body for the field and one of the societies Dr Mouzakis belongs to, has issued formal warnings about unlicensed personnel performing hair restoration surgery, describing it as a growing trend that puts patients at risk. Its position is that preoperative evaluation, surgical planning, hairline design, donor harvesting and recipient site creation should be performed by a properly trained and licensed physician, and it urges patients to ask directly who will be performing their surgery and what their training and licensure are.
Dr Mouzakis works with his own long-standing team of hair transplant technicians, who have worked alongside him for many years. They assist. They do not substitute.
FUE and U-FUE Hair Transplantation
Dr Mouzakis performs Follicular Unit Excision only, and places every graft with a specialised implanter pen, a technique often referred to as Direct Hair Implantation. Rather than gripping each fragile graft with forceps and inserting it into a pre-made incision, the pen creates the site and delivers the graft in a single movement without the root being touched or squeezed. This gives complete control over the depth, angle and direction of every individual hair, supporting follicle survival, density and a natural hairline.
He does not perform strip FUT, which removes a band of scalp and leaves a permanent linear scar.

As far as we are aware, no other UK practice pairs a consultant plastic surgeon performing hair transplantation with a consultant dermatologist specialising in hair and scalp disease in this way. Surgical hair restoration is widely available. So, separately, is medical hair loss treatment. Having both under one roof, with the two clinicians referring freely between each other, is what is unusual.
The arrangement works in both directions. Patients who come to Dr Veraitch with a hair or scalp problem and who would benefit from surgery are referred across to Dr Mouzakis. Patients who come to Dr Mouzakis for a transplant and whose history, examination or imaging suggests something medical is going on are referred to her, and seen separately. Many transplant patients need only the surgeon, and that is a perfectly good outcome.
Training and Career
Dr Mouzakis is originally from Athens. He read medicine at the University of Rome, La Sapienza, graduating with distinction and in the top ten per cent of his year, and completed core surgical training in Greece before moving to the United Kingdom for higher specialist training in plastic surgery.
His UK training posts included Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge, the Lister Hospital in Stevenage and St Thomas’ Hospital in London. He holds a Master of Science in Aesthetic Medicine from Queen Mary University of London, awarded with distinction, and completed a cosmetic fellowship in breast aesthetic surgery on Harley Street.
He has trained internationally in high-definition body contouring with Dr Alfredo Hoyos, in ultrasound-guided gluteal lipofilling with Dr Daniel Del Vecchio in Miami, and in micro-cannula liposuction under local anaesthetic in California. He is one of a small number of Total Definer accredited surgeons in the United Kingdom, and also works in the NHS as a part-time consultant skin cancer surgeon.
