Why vascular laser?

Vascular lasers (such as pulse dye laser (PDL) and ND:Yag) are used to correct various vascular and pigmented skin conditions, associated with unwanted capillaries and blood vessels. They can be used to treat a number of conditions including facial redness, birthmarks and spider veins.

Treating your skin concerns

  • Facial redness
  • Spider veins, leg veins and telangiectasia
  • Scars
  • Stretch Marks
  • Birthmarks, port wine stain or haemangioma
  • Warts
  • Inflamed acne
  • Rosacea
  • Melasma

How do vascular lasers work?

Vascular lasers use energy to target and destroy unwanted capillaries and blood vessels of the skin. The laser wavelength is chosen to selectively target the abnormal blood vessels, sparing the surrounding normal skin. The laser generates a powerful light, and when this light contacts the skin, the red colour of the blood vessels absorbs the light, which then releases its energy as heat. The heat coagulates and cauterises the small vessels under the skin, which are eventually absorbed by the body.

Your Questions Answered

What happens during the treatment?

After cleaning the area, the area to be treated will be marked out and photographed. Eye coverings to protect your eyes will also be placed. Your doctor will then place a handheld device, moving the device over the treatment area. A cold stream of air is also given to help comfort levels during the treatment. When your treatment is finished a cold compress can be applied to ease any discomfort.

Does it hurt?

The vascular lasers produces much less pain or discomfort than needle, electrolysis or traditional lasers. However, there is still some discomfort reported with this treatment. Each pulse of the laser causes a snapping sensation similar to the snapping of a rubber band. The device has a built in cooling system is highly effective in further reducing discomfort.

When will I see results?

Initial post treatment redness should fade in one to ten days. You’ll see the maximum benefit from the treatment after eight weeks. Repeat treatments may be needed to achieve desired results.

How many treatments will I need?

For optimal results, a series of three to five sessions spaced a few weeks apart is recommended.

What is the down time?

You can return to normal activities immediately. However, the area treated can turn a deeper pinkish colour, which can be disguised by using coverage makeup, if desired.
